________
Mbkhar is a contemporary architectural object that reimagines the traditional mabkhar as a permanent element within the home. Rather than functioning as a handheld incense burner, it transforms the ritual of burning bukhoor into a spatial experience. Bukhoor is placed within a drawer at the base of the tower, allowing the smoke to rise through a vertically illuminated chamber before gradually escaping through the top.
Drawing inspiration from the form and environmental logic of traditional wind towers, the object reverses their function: rather than drawing cool air downwards, it celebrates the movement of warm air and smoke. A combination of smoke, clay, timber, brass, and textile balances material traditions with contemporary craftsmanship, while the translucent fabric softens light, captures scent and reveals the movement of smoke.
Designed as both a functional object and a piece of domestic furniture, Mbkhar gives the ritual of bukhoor a permanent place within the home, allowing fragrance, light and smoke to become part of the everyday atmosphere.
