Mar'a: pocket mirror

The Mar’a pocket mirror combines wood, thread and metal using hand and machine-made techniques to reflect how the UAE values the past, the present and the future by balancing its preservation of cultural heritage with its drive for innovation.

Mar’a is an acknowledgement of the remarkable aesthetics of woven Sadu tents.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Yara Habib is a graphic designer and emerging product designer and has lived in Lebanon, Canada, UK and the UAE. A Graphic Design BA graduate from the Lebanese American University, she worked for four years as a graphic designer for various corporate clients mainly in Montreal, Canada before undertaking a MA in Graphic Branding and Identity at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. She then went on to co-found Djoyn, a branding boutique design studio operating in Beirut and Montreal. In early 2018, Habib launched Layers by Yara in the UAE, a collection of design pieces made of multiple layers of wood, acrylic glass and metal, with the aim of taking artwork back to its original state, inspired by new technologies.

Yara Habib produced the 'Mar'a' series as part of her participation in Tanween 2019.
