________

Aftermatter is a design system for objects, materials, and construction logics that begins with what remains after use. Rather than a single product, it is a framework that can move across furniture, sculpture, architecture, and material research. Object I is the first physical entry into that framework: a sculptural side table in which modularity, structure, discarded matter, and architectural language converge within a compact form.

The project began with spent coffee grounds, a residue produced daily at home and discarded almost without thought. Coffee became the first material question of Aftermatter. Over several months it was dried, ground, mixed, bound, pressed, printed, broken, tested, and recalibrated. This stage was not about using waste as a surface story, but about confronting discarded matter as a design problem: how it behaves, where it fails, how it can be shaped, and whether it can acquire enough permanence to become part of an object with presence.

Through this experimentation, the need for a system became clear. If the material was unstable, evolving, or still under research, the design could not depend on a single fixed recipe. Aftermatter therefore developed through modularity: repeatable components, structural frames, stacked volumes, voids, and proportions that can be rearranged, extended, scaled, and translated into different objects. The system became the constant, allowing the material to remain open-ended — evolving as the research continues.
